#Wal-Mart Eliminates Health Benefits For Nearly 30,000 More Employees,
D'innocenzio) reports that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to
eliminate health insurance coverage for many of its part-time
employees in order to control costs. Effective January 1,
employees working fewer than 30 hours per week will no
longer qualify for the company’s health plan. The Affordable
Care Act (ACA) requires large employers to offer insurance
coverage to people working more than 30 hours weekly.
Yesterday’s announcement follows similar moves by other
large-box retailers including Home Depot, Trader Joe’s,
Walgreens, and Target to reduce their health coverage of
part-time workers, and Wal-Mart previously cut back its
program in 2011 to eliminate coverage of associates working
fewer than 24 hours per week.
